What do you do when your car lacks Bluetooth connectivity and a built-in navigation system? If you’re like Aykut Çelik, you swap out your “useless” radio and replace it with an Android tablet. Now, Google Maps, Spotify and other applications can be found right in his 2014 VW Polo’s dash.
To bring this fairly complex project to life, Çelik utilized an amplifier, a CAN bus shield (so he could still use the volume controls on the steering wheel), a Bluetooth module for communication, and an Arduino Mega (ATmega2560) for parsing data and sending it over to the tablet.
As you can see in the video below, quite a bit of hacking went into this build. You can find a detailed breakdown here, as well as all of its code and software on GitHub. While it’s no Tesla, it’s pretty darn cool nevertheless.
