For those of us who’ve ever lived in a dorm room and have shared a bathroom with others know just how disgusting that can be. Cognizant of this, Maker Cengizhan Can and his friends decided to build an automated air freshener for one of their bathrooms at the Utrecht University in the Netherlands.
The project, which was completed as part of a class assignment, consists of an old R2-D2 candy jar filled with sensors, actuators for triggering the freshener, an LCD for displaying ambient temperature information and the number of remaining fragrance shots, and an Arduino for its brain.
An external door sensor checks to see if the stall is open, and paired with a light sensor, only sprays delightful scents after use. In other words, don’t worry about it going off while you’re still in the stall! What’s more, Can and his classmates added a motion sensor and an ultrasonic sensor, which could be used for determining occupancy.
