Whether you’re the type who always forgets to take the garbage out or finds themselves constantly having to remind a roommate or significant other to do their chore, the Open Trash Can is for perfect you. The brainchild of “matthewh8,” this home accessory connects to your Wi-Fi network and then sends you email alerts when it’s full. Plus, it can be controlled from  an accompanying Android app, opening the door to endless possibilities.

The system itself consists of an Arduino Leonardo (ATmega32U4), an Iduino Yun Shield, an Elechouse MP3 Shield, a pair of computer speakers, a 4GB SD card, two range sensors, an HC-06 Bluetooth module, a micro servo motor, a 9V battery or wall adapter, some jumper wires, and an inexpensive trash can (of course!).

Simply stated, the Open Trash Can boasts an Arduino for its brain and uses a range sensor in the front to open its servo motor-driven lid whenever it detects motion. The second range sensor in the rear to read the fill level of the bin. Speech snippets stored on an SD card are emitted through computer speakers glued to the side of the can via the MP3 shield, while emails are sent with the help of the Wi-Fi shield and Temboo API. On top of that, the Bluetooth module enables it to be connected to an Android device.

“This project started out serious, then I kept thinking of funny things I wanted to make it do. The only way I could think to present it was a corny infomercial style video,” the Maker explains.

Want to have some fun at home or even in the office? Then head over to the Open Trash Can’s Instructables page to get started, and be sure to watch its fun ‘infomercial’ below!
