Wireless keyboards and mice are fairly common, but what if you want to use a set that have older-style PS/2 cables with your tablet or smartphone? If this is you, then look no further than Evan Kale’s adapter build, which is squeezed inside of a Minions toy from McDonald’s. According to the video, this should help you pwn noobs even if your fingers are too fat for your touchscreen, or perhaps it could also help you type faster.
Usage aside, Kale’s project starts out by disassembling “Kevin,” and modifying it so that the required PS/2 ports as well as a female USB port can be inserted. After this step, Kale gives a broad diagram of how the system will work. The mouse and keyboard are plugged into the PS/2 ports, which connect to an Arduino Nano (ATmega328), then they finally communicate with the smartphone or tablet using a Bluetooth chip.
After some software work to reconfigure the Bluetooth module as a human interface device (HID), Kale then reprogramed the Arduino to translate the PS/2 input into a Bluetooth output. After everything was wired up everything and tested it on a breadboard, he was able to squeeze everything into “Kevin” with an NFC tag on the top. This allows connection to a smart device by simply tapping the toy’s head.
